Will Italy leave the European Union?

On December 4, 2016, a referendum was held in Italy. It was held on the initiative of Matteo Renzi, the Italian Prime Minister. A number of issues were put to the vote that could completely restructure the country’s governance system. But the Italians voted against.

Matteo Renzi, as promised, resigned. And in its place can come people who are opposed to the EU.

Italy has few options. The amount of the country’s domestic debt is growing, the banking system is on the verge of collapse. Most likely, Italy simply will not be able to pay its debts, and it will be expelled from the European Union. But there is another option. The new government – most likely to be Renzi’s opponents – will hold another referendum, this time on leaving the EU. It is even clear to a non-specialist that the Italians will vote for the exit. For the country, this is a unique opportunity to leave with its head held high.
